ABSTRACT

The relationship of culture and theology is a primary concern for people of faith. This dissertation addresses that issue in the Korean context through a study of the uri worldview theme, examining its effects on the Korean church as well as its relationship to the Bible and Christian ecclesiology. Built on a framework of critical contextualization, this research begins with the culture and expands to incorporate biblical and theological content. Employing worldview theory, uri is investigated as a theme in light of worldview universals and cultural subsystems through relevant literature, then by participant observation in a local Korean-American Presbyterian church. The process next engages two biblical accounts and relevant literature from an uri viewpoint. Progression concludes in a dialogue with traditional Christian theology, particularly ecclesiology, where the uri theme brings unique thought to this field. This examination falls neatly into four parts. Since the worldview theme is a central factor in my research, Part I begins by defining the concept. This is followed by a survey of Korean culture to observe the ways in which the uri theme appears. In Part II attention shifts to the Korean-American church, specifically church officer terms of reference, to gain insight into uri assumptions held in that context. Paradigms that shed light on tacit understandings and influences of uri in the thought and behavior of church members are then generated. Part III observes the Bible from an uri perspective. The Old Testament account of Joseph and the New Testament story of Paul are searched with a focus on their relationships to those who were part of their respective lives. These are examined in biographical fashion and tenets governing wri-type relationships are sought. Part IV concerns itself with contextual theology and ecclesiology. After presenting a thematic model for contextualization, this research addresses the corporate-individual dilemma within the church, as well as its fundamentally communal nature. The process culminates bringing biblical corrections to uri assumptions and a presentation of uri as a viable model for understanding the church.
